The Fishermen's Museum was started by George Noseworthy, an artist who moved from the USA to live and paint in this area. George had started an art school for any interested child in the old school at Hibb's Cove, and had noted the frequency that antique dealers came around and bought items for a few cents. He started collecting artifacts and displayed them in the school in 1967 and 1968. Space soon became inadequate, but by that time, public interest had been kindled. A board of Directors was formed and construction of the present building was started in 1969. Money was raised by donations, sale of charter, life and early memberships, etc., the children bought "shingles" and in May 1970 the Fishermen's Museum was officially opened.

On display are numerous artifacts which depict the life and work of the Newfoundland inshore fisherman. An exhibit of various types of boats used in the fishery of the past are also on display.

Porter House

This house is furnished very similar to when it was built and is a typical fishermen's home of that period. The furniture is mostly handmade. One room is set up with a display of sea shells, fish and a small wildlife display. The house is owned and operated by the Fishermen's Museum and open at the same times as the museum.

Hibb's Hole School

This is one of the few remaining one room schools which were once common to a great many of the small communities scattered around the coast of Newfoundland. This school has a display of typical one room school and also has a photographic display showing different aspects ofthe fishery and the way of life in a small outport. Both past and present times are represented. The school is operated by the Fishermen's Museum and open at the same times as the museum.
