New Horizons For Seniors Program
Summary: Through documenting interviews with seniors and background research, a story of the evolution of a community can be composed. One unique use of this information will be to use it for storyboards or plaques along a proposed walking trail throughout and around the town of Deer Lake. Deer Lake is a relatively new town, settled to a great extent in conjunction with the development of the Corner Brook paper mil in the 1920's Original settlers are still here but their numbers are dwindling.
Objectives: By gathering information from seniors about how settlement changes, a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities this involves can be shared with younger generations. By coordinating this project with other community programs the needs of seniors are more likley to be considered. This is the basic objective. The history of a town is best told by people who have been there from its earlier beginnings.
Expected Results: The body of work will be produced as a permanent addition to oral history. The work will form the basis of the heritage story boards that can be placed along proposed trails. This result will gradually evolve as the trails evolve and will add to the experience of both local people and visitors who know little of the people who helped create this town.
