The Protected Areas Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (PAA) will be holding an Open House in the Maynard's Torrent River Inn on Friday, May 13th, 2005, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Protected Areas Association Launches Environmental Art Competition
The Protected Areas Association of Newfoundland and Labrador would like to invite students from grades K - 12 to participate in a province-wide environmental art competition with the theme "What Wild Place is Special to You?". This competition is being launched as a continuation of Wildlife Week, April 10 - 16, 2005 and will extend until May 20, 2005.

Golf course expansion threatens to sink Frenchman’s Cove Provincial Park
The Protected Areas Association of Newfoundland and Labrador condemns the proposed expansion of the Grande Meadows Golf Course in Frenchman’s Cove Provincial Park, a development which threatens to sink the already seriously compromised park.

Benefit Concert in Celebration of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Natural Areas
The Protected Areas Association of Newfoundland and Labrador announces the line-up for their 15th Annual Benefit Concert. This year the event will be held on Tuesday, November 16th, at 7:30pm at the LSPU Hall. A silent auction will also be held, beginning at 7:00pm.

Conservation Based Forest Management Receives Provincial Attention
The Sierra Club of Canada Forest Campaign hosted a 2 day strategizing meeting focusing on conservation-based forest management at Killdevil Camp and Conference Centre this past weekend, September 18-20. Conservationists from around the province as well as representatives from national organizations gathered to discuss current challenges, past successes and future goals for improving the management and preservation of Newfoundland and Labrador’s forests.

Minister of Environment and Conservation presents donation to support creation of environmental centre
The Honourable Tom Osborne will present a donation today to the Protected Areas Association and the Newfoundland and Labrador Environment Network (NLEN) at the NLEN's Annual General Meeting. The donation will be used to support the creation of a center to house non-governmental environmental organizations. The NLEN and PAA gratefully acknowledge this support from the Department of Environment and Conservation.

The newly released Provincial Sustainable Forest Management Strategy has taken some small steps towards true sustainability but still has a way to go according to an environmental coalition.

Executive Director Wins Environmental Award
Congratulations to Protected Areas Association’s Executive Director, Laura Jackson, for receiving a Provincial Environment Award (individual category). Laura is a respected and effective voice for conservation of natural areas in the province and throughout Canada. The Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Awards were announced on May 31, 2004 in St. John’s by Tom Osborne, Minister of Environment and Conservation, Shirley Fraize, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Women’s Institutes, and John Scott, Chairman and CEO of the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board.

Give Boreal Birds Something to Sing About: Environmental Art Competition Launched
The Protected Areas Association of Newfoundland and Labrador would like to invite students from grades 4-12 to participate in a province-wide environmental art competition with the theme Give Boreal Birds Something to Sing About. This competition is being launched on Earth Day April 22, 2004 and will extend until May 21, 2004.

Protected Areas Association Condemns Hunting of Threatened Caribou
The Protected Areas Association of Newfoundland and Labrador condemns the hunting of caribou in the threatened Red Wine herd, and urges Quebec Innu hunters involved in this illegal hunt to follow their traditional values of conservation and fairness with respect to the natural world.

The Little Grand Lake Ecological Reserve is finally near realization. The people of Newfoundland and Labrador now have an opportunity to ensure that this area, so critical to the endangered Newfoundland marten, is preserved. The reserve and the marten need our help.

Groups press for effective action on provincial forestry issues
A collection of environmental non-government organizations, concerned citizens and one aboriginal group await decisive action from the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods regarding its Sustainable Forest Management Strategy. The Sierra Club of Canada, the Canadian Nature Federation, the Third Signatory, the Protected Areas Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Labrador Métis Nation, and Father John McCarthy jointly submitted a detailed response to the department’s Sustainable Forest Management Plan after it was opened for public consultation on June 2, 2003.

Overwhelming Response to David Suzuki Visit
Dr. David Suzuki will spend a day in St. John’s, arriving the morning of May 12th. The visit is being organized by the Protected Areas Association of Newfoundland & Labrador and the Newfoundland and Labrador Environment Network. Due to overwhelming response to the lecture, organizers have had to book a larger venue.

Conservation groups withdraw lawsuit given Government’s assurance to protect Windmill Bight Provincial Park
Conservation groups today agreed to withdraw their lawsuit aimed at halting construction of a proposed golf course in Windmill Bight Provincial Park, citing Government’s December 2002 rejection of the development as a strong commitment to uphold protection of the park.

Plans for Trans Labrador Highway threaten proposed Akamiuapishku / Mealy Mountains National Park
The Protected Areas Association recommends that the Environmental Impact Statement and Comprehensive Study for the Trans Labrador Highway – Phase III is deficient and should be returned to the proponent for revision and amendment.
