ASSOCIATION REGIONALE DE LA COTE OUEST, INC. (ARCO)

Association Regionale de la Cote Ouest, Inc. (ARCO), is the umbrella association for the three (3) French associations in the Port au Port Area. (They are Chez les Francais in Black Duck Brook, Les Terre Neuviens Francais in Cape St. George and l'Heritage de l'ile Rouge in Mainland.) Arco is located in Mainland at Ecole Ste. Anne. It's goal is to promote and preserve the French Language and Culture on the Port au Port Peninsula, especially in the three French-speaking communities (Mainland, Cape St. George and Black Duck Brook).

Community involvement, social interaction and promotion of the French Culture through organized cultural events is their main focus, in their effort to maintain the French language and culture. Various festivals are held to help promote both culture and language. One of the most recent festivals is the Festival Emilie Benoit. It celebrates the life of Emilie Benoit, local musician and storyteller. It is celebrated in July.

Arco is also involved in French Literacy programs. They have established an Adult Literacy program, which consists of night classes, and a Family Literacy program that involves teaching pre-preschool children French. Both program are designed to teach French-Newfoundlanders (who cannot speak french) the language.

Arco also has an economic development plan, designed to strengthen the economic conditions of the French communities on the Port au Port Peninsula.
