THE FRENCH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

With the establishment of the Air Force Base, Harmon Field, in Stephenville, traditional pursuits in the Fishery and Agriculture were largely neglected because of better paying jobs at the base. These jobs led to road construction. Roads increased contact with the rest of Newfoundland and increased fears that the French language and culture might be lost.

In the 1970s, French Language Programs were started at the instance of parents (children had to attend English schools at that time). These programs met with some success, especially in Mainland - which still has a thriving French community.

In the late 80's, two French schools opened on the Peninsula. They includeEcole Notre Dame Du Cap (Preschool - Grade 9) in Degrau, and Ecole Ste. Anne (Preschool - Level III) in Mainland.

They were established as a way to revive the French language, since many of the parents, after years of English schooling, could not speak French. The introduction of French Imersion schools, as well as Preschool have made an impact. However, more is needed, especially in homes where the parents are unable to speak French.
