| Micmacs in Newfoundland are known as Taqamkukewa'q (People of the land across the water). Traditionally the Micmac were nomadic hunters, fishers, food gathers, and harvesters. | |

While it is not certain when the Micmacs came to Newfoundland, it is known that they have been in the Province for at least two centuries. It has been suggested that the Micmacs were brought to Newfoundland by the French in the 16th and 17th Centuries and paid a bounty for every Beothuk (Native Aboriginals) they killed. There is no documentary evidence to support this view. The Micmacs for the most part chose to stay in the Southern Part of Newfoundland, well removed from the Beothuk. |
